CrossPrayerDear Fellow Parish Bulletin Reps:  November is dedicated to the Souls in Purgatory, whose feast is celebrated on November 2.  The Holy Father’s Intentions for the month of November 2018:  Universal – In Service of Peace:  That the language of love and dialogue may always prevail over the language of conflict.  Feasts for November:  All Saints (11/1), All Souls (11/2), Martin de Porres (11/3), Leo the Great (11/10) Josaphat (11/12), Frances Xavier Cabrini (11/13), Albert the Great (11/15) Margaret of Scotland, Gertrude (11/16), Elizabeth of Hungary (11/17), Presentation of Mary (11/21), Cecilia (11/22) Clement J; Columban;  Blessed Miguel Agustin Pro (USA), Thanksgiving Day (`11/23), Andrew Dung-Lac and Companions (11/24), Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe (11/25), Andrew (11/30).

Anyone who met Padre Pio believed that he had a direct connection with the afterlife,.  When asked about a dead relative or friend, it was fascinating the good Padre always had an answer.”More souls of the dead from Purgatory than of the living climb this mountain to attend my Masses and seek my prayers.” ‘The souls in Purgatory pray for us, and their prayers are even more effective than ours because they are accompanied by their suffering.  “So, let’s pray for them, and let’s pray them to pray for us.”  “Most of the saved pass through Purgatory before arriving at the fullness of beatitude.”  Pope Pius XII died in Castelgandolfo on October 9, 1958.  On that day Padre Pio told a Friar:  “Pius XII is in Heaven.  I saw him during Mass.”

Each November the Church gives us an extraordinary gift that we can extend to our ‘dear suffering friends.” From November 1-8 a plenary indulgence is available for Catholics in a state of grace who visit a cemetery and pray, even if only mentally, for the dead.  This indulgence can only be applied to the souls in Purgatory.  On other days, the indulgence is partial.

In addition to praying in the cemetery, the conditions for a plenary indulgence are:  (a) to receive Communion once for each intended indulgence;  (b) go to Confession – a single Confession will suffice for all;  and (c) pray at least one Our Father and one Hail Mary for the Pope;’s intentions.
