Parish Library Through the Catholic publishing company, Magnificat, we have received some children’s books for those who are 3 to 10 years old. We invite you and your children to browse through the library shelves and read one of these books about Jesus, the Bible, Prayer, Faith, Saints, and a Missal for Mass. Whether it’s read at Church or borrowed for home use, we hope that you and your children will enjoy these new, age-appropriate books about our Catholic faith. Our Library (located in the Church Narthex, Hospitality Area) offers a variety of books, especially for adults, thanks to donations by a number of parishioners. One of our members, Peggy Rabideau, who is a retired librarian, has labeled and sectioned our library. Some of the categories are: Old and New Testament, Prayer, Spirituality, Catholicism, Family Health/Illness, Inspirational, Children, and Saints Please feel free to borrow a book and return it when done. Thank you to all those who have helped contribute to our Parish Library. Please let us know if these new materials are enriching to your children, and if you have other suggestions for additional resources (contact Joanne Denyer at jdenyer@ stjoesylvania.org).

Historic Saint Patrick Soup Kitchen – We prepare and serve a noon meal to the public the last Sunday of each month. The soup kitchen is a ministry of Historic Saint Patrick parish, and operates out of the LMHA building catty-corner to Saint Patrick. They only serve the one meal, each Sunday at noon. Saint Joseph was asked to provide personnel to prepare and serve on the last Sunday of each month back in 1991, and we have continuously provided volunteers since then. Saint Patrick covers the food, and we have an early shift that prepares food from 10:00 a.m. until noon, and a later shift that serves from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. Mike Kruse (419-882-6381/mike.kruse@heidtman.com)

The families we serve are referred to us by Harbor, Heroes in Action, Sylvania Area Family Services, and our own parish. We are blessed that it has been funded by donations, and staff ed by many volunteers. For further information or to volunteer, please contact: Laurie Foster (419-460-1702/LCMR59@bex.net) Sue Jurski (419-350-8161/suejurski@bex.net)

Saint Paul Soup Kitchen – In the mid 90’s our parish was also asked to support Saint Paul United Methodist Soup Kitchen. This is a one time per year commitment, usually in mid-September. Our commitment is a Sunday meal served at 1:30 p.m. to the general public from Saint Paul Community Center and Shelter downtown. Different churches throughout the area provide both the food and preparation for approximately 150 meals each Saturday and Sunday throughout the year. This year marks our 35th annual Saint Joseph Giving Tree. Our parish has made a long time commitment of helping the less fortunate by providing local charities and organizations with Christmas gifts when they otherwise would have little hope of a gift to open on Christmas morning. Through your participation in the 2018 Giving Tree, Saint Joseph Parish will be supplying Christmas gifts to the following organizations. The tree is in the sanctuary this weekend, November 24th and 25th. There will be about 1,800 felt ornaments individually tagged for a specific need or want. EACH TAG REPRESENTS A PERSON. The importance of these items cannot be expressed even though they may seem small. After Mass, we invite you to take as many tags as you like from the tree. Please buy the item, wrap it (unless denoted DO NOT WRAP on tag), securely TAPE the tag to the present and return to your charities bin in the Narthex the following weekend, December 2. All items must have a tag to ensure they are delivered to the proper charity. Tags are recycled the following year whenever possible. The gratitude expressed by all the people we have served as a parish is immeasurable and I would like to thank you all in advance for your participation. During a time when so many people are facing financial distress, it is comforting to have the stability offered by the Saint Joseph Parish family. Please don’t hesitate to contact me or Jan Redmann with any questions, Kara Nachtrab (419-356- 4441/knachtrab@gmail.com) or Jan Redmann (419-843-5321).

Evening Prayer During Advent Vespers (Evening Prayer) will take place in Church on December 4, December 11, and December 18th from 7:00 to 7:30 p.m. On December 18th, we will also off er Penance from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. All parishioners are invited to this public prayer as a way of celebrating this seasonal time of expectation and preparing us for the joyful coming of our Lord, Jesus. Vespers is one of the prayers of the Liturgy of the Hours—the public prayer of the Church for praising God and sanctifying the day. Please join us as we give thanks for the blessings of the day! All Catholics are called to this prayer.
